Sara Schalit was born in Poltava, Ukraine, daughter of a "Hassid" who married a member of the "Mitnegged" school. When disagreement arose between her father and her husband on account of their opposing philosphies she refused to agree to her father's demand to divorce her husband.
After the birth of her first children she began to broaden her knowledge and studied languages alongside her husband, Eliezer Elhanan Schalit.
She came to Rishon Le Zion in 1882 and is counted among its founding members.
